Increasing the protein - a receptor called Nogo that is found on nerve cells - reduced the concentration of beta-amyloid plaques in the brains of mice bred to develop Alzheimer's disease, the researchers reported in the current issue of the journal Neuroscience.

The plaques are associated with diminished cognitive function.

ADVERTISEMENT Conversely, reducing Nogo receptors increased the amount of plaque that developed in the brains of mice.
